Your Car Isn’t Covered in Thailand Unless You Do This First

Malaysians planning to drive into southern Thailand should secure proper cross-border motor insurance, following the severe floods in Hat Yai that left hundreds of vehicles stranded and exposed real gaps in protection.

Hundreds of Malaysians affected by the Hat Yai disaster

The floods in Hat Yai were triggered by days of intense rainfall across Songkhla province, inundating roads, hotels and business districts. Several areas were cut off with little warning.

More than 500 Malaysian-owned vehicles were reported stranded, according to the Malaysian Consul General in Songkhla, Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi. Thai authorities later permitted Malaysian tow trucks into the area to help retrieve affected vehicles. Many of those vehicles still had loans on them, which may leave owners paying out of pocket.

One lesson became clear: most Malaysians still do not know how little protection their cars actually have once they cross the border.

1. Your Malaysian car insurance does not automatically cover Thailand

Many drivers assume their comprehensive policy protects them everywhere. Thailand feels "just next door", and because friends and family have driven there safely, it seems harmless.

Your Malaysian comprehensive insurance does NOT automatically cover your vehicle in Thailand.
A standard motor policy only covers incidents within Malaysia unless you activate a specific extension called Endorsement 101 (Extension to Thailand).

Without this extension: accidents in Thailand are not covered, floods in Thailand are not covered, towing from Thailand back to Malaysia is not covered, and you pay everything out of pocket. This is why so many Malaysians struggled during the Hat Yai floods.

2. What Endorsement 101 is, and why you need it

Endorsement 101 is the official extension that allows your car insurance to follow you into southern Thailand. It provides:

  • Own damage cover, your vehicle is covered up to its insured value if damaged in Thailand
  • Third-party property damage, cover up to RM100,000 if you damage someone else's property or vehicle
  • Flexible duration, available from 1 day up to 30 days, and easy to activate through your insurer or agent

3. Add Special Perils (Endorsement 57), especially during monsoon

Thailand is no stranger to sudden floods, particularly around Hat Yai, Songkhla and Betong. A basic policy does not cover flood damage unless you add this endorsement.

Endorsement 57, Special Perils covers damage caused by floods, storms, landslides and other natural disasters.

4. Thailand requires Compulsory Motor Insurance (CMI) at the border

This is a legal requirement. Even with Endorsement 101, Thai authorities require all foreign vehicles to purchase Compulsory Motor Insurance (CMI) from a Thai insurance provider before entering.

CMI covers third-party injury only. It does not cover your car, property damage, floods or accidents. You can buy it at the border crossings such as Sadao, Bukit Kayu Hitam and Wang Kelian.

5. Towing your vehicle back to Malaysia

During the Hat Yai floods, many Malaysians were shocked at how costly towing from Thailand can be. Without proper cover, towing back can run into thousands of ringgit, many were stuck waiting days for assistance, and some were told their policies simply did not apply outside Malaysia.

With Endorsement 101 and Endorsement 57 in place, towing is arranged by your insurer from the border, costs are significantly reduced or covered, and claims can be processed smoothly.

The mistake that caught people out

Relying on a normal comprehensive policy that does not apply outside Malaysia. That single assumption left hundreds of cars stranded with no cover.

Your biggest risks as a Malaysian motorist entering Thailand are floods, accidents, lack of third-party cover, expensive towing, and simply being uninsured abroad. All of these are avoidable with Endorsement 101, Endorsement 57 and Thai CMI, at a small fraction of the cost of repairs, towing or a total loss.
